SWA Corporate Layoffs

SWA Corporate Layoffs

February 18, 2025

We at SWAPA are saddened to hear of the announced job cuts at Company headquarters, as are many of the other labor groups here at Southwest. While SWAPA has been critical of efficiency at headquarters for some time, these cuts affect the livelihoods of many of our coworkers, and our hearts go out to them in this time of uncertainty.

Many of our Pilots here at Southwest have spouses, siblings, and children who work in various parts of the Company so we would like to gently remind you  that our Project LIFT is a group of trained volunteers who are available to assist you and your family during challenging times.

This is an unprecedented moment in the history of Southwest Airlines. Speculation is natural, and we will continue to pursue the facts, reporting them to you as we receive them. Our CBA contains many notification requirements of any personnel actions that affect Pilots. None of those have been triggered at present, and we are unaware of any intention to do so. In fact, the gradually increasing network schedules from March through August includes a return to historical peaks of aircraft utilization — in part due to red-eye implementation — which will require close to normal Pilot staffing levels. Between the network strategy, the lack of hiring, and planned attrition from retirements, the Pilot manning outlook is right sizing naturally. But, as always, SWAPA stands ready to defend the provisions provided in our CBA should that be needed.

We ask that you keep our coworkers at SWA headquarters, whose lives are impacted by this announcement, in your thoughts and prayers. We continue to be engaged with the Company to gain more information on the details of this decision and how this could potentially affect the operation. Until then, continue to do what you do best — lead, stay professional, and be the backbone of resilience that our passengers expect from the Pilots of Southwest Airlines.

In solidarity,

Jody Reven
